It’s hard to believe that more than thirty years have passed since Kathleen Turner scalded the big screen in her film debut, Body Heat. In it she introduced a rare brand of physicality and sexual allure that became her trademark over the years. Now that she has inevitably, though gracefully, aged Ms. Turner continues to evolve as a performer. While still a marvelously physical actress, she brings a well-earned thoughtfulness and intensity to her stage performances that have justifiably riveted audiences. Turner is in Toronto for a six-day run of the play High, in which she plays a foul-mouthed recovering alcoholic nun, a performance nothing short of a tour de force.

Two-time Golden Globe winner, Academy Award and Tony Award nominee, Kathleen Turner has previously delighted theatre audiences in such productions as Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Graduate and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Now, Turner brings what may be her most compelling performance to Toronto’s acclaimed Royal Alexandra Theatre. Critics have raved about her sandpapery, sarcastic turn as Sister Jamison Connolly, a counsellor at a drug rehab centre. She handles the adult themes and strong language of the play with a blend of sharply edged humour and compassion.

When Sister Jamison Connolly agrees to sponsor a 19-year-old drug user in an effort to help him combat his addiction, her own faith is tested. Struggling between her role as a rehabilitation counsellor and a woman of religious conviction, she begins to question her belief that people can find the courage to change. High explores the universal themes of truth, forgiveness, redemption and human fallibility. In a recent interview Turner admits she was naive about addiction before she got involved with the play. “I don’t think I realized the extent of addiction in our countries — how many people are affected by it.”
