THE BEST IN BROADWAY THIS APRIL

If you haven’t been to Broadway in New York for a while, or have never had the distinct pleasure, this spring’s theatrical productions feature a variety of wonderful musicals, comedies and edgy drama for your spectating delight.

ANYTHING GOES. Cole Porter’s musical toy box of dreams, rhymes and cheek, is a must for any musical theater lover. Tri-level tap, vaudeville shtick, and slick costumes still charm, and songs like “You’re the Top,” “It’s De-lovely,” and “I Get a Kick out of You” still thrill. Charts the nautical travels of cabaret star Reno Sweeney. Stephen Sondheim Theatre 124 West 43rd Street., New York, NY 10036 | 212-239-6200

CHICAGO. Chic production of the show about female killers in a Jazz Age prison. Fossean élan and cartwheels. A musical with swing, and sex. The closing “Hot Honey Rag,” combusts. Endures as a premier musical. If the movie shorted you, dig the real thing. Ambassador Theatre 219 W. 49th Street., New York, NY 10019 | 212-239-6200

HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING. Hip revival of the Tony-laden classic, helmed by Rob Ashford, and a quick cast. Young window-cleaner, J. Pierrepont Finch, vaults from the mail-room to Vice President of Advertising at the World-Wide Wicket Company. Features a beloved score by Frank Loesser, and standards like “I Believe in You,” “The Company Way,” and “Been a Long Day”. Al Hirschfeld Theatre 302 W. 45th Street, New York, NY 10036 | 212-239-6200

MAMMA MIA! Titled after the mega-hit by the Swedish pop group Abba, whose other hits fill the score. The action—an American, Donna Sheridan, flirts with British and American tourists—is set on a small Greek isle. The show’s spark came when Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, Abba’s male half—caught the London production of Grease. Winter Garden 1634 Broadway, New York, NY 10019 | 212-239-6200

VENUS IN FUR. David Ives’s stylish light-bondage comedy, Venus In Fur, studies the erotics of power, or the power of erotics. Vanda, a young actress, vies for the lead in a play based on the erotic novel, Venus in Fur. Her torrid audition for the macho director triggers love and war. Samuel J. Friedman Theatre 261 W. 47th Street., New York, NY 10036 | 212-239-620

WICKED. This prequel to The Wizard of Oz tells of Glinda and Elphaba—i.e. the Good Witch of the East and the Wicked Witch of the West. Despite ups and downs, their amity endures, from sorcery school on, through many capers. The Tin Man, Cowardly Lion and Scarecrow get nicely back-storied. The scenery sprawls: a dragon breathes fire from the proscenium arch, and winged monkeys flap overhead. Gershwin Theatre 222 W. 51st Street, New York, NY 10019 | 212-586-6510
