Few festivals better suit their city than the San Francisco International Film Festival. The vibe is decidedly West Coast, laid back, low key, and remarkably intimate. It’s a festival programmed by film-lovers for people who love film. Renowned as a showcase of cinematic discovery and innovation, in one of the world’s most enchanting cities, the San Francisco International Film Festival offers a wide range of marquee premieres, international competitions, documentaries, new digital media work, live music performances and gala events.

Founded in 1957, SFIFF is the longest-running film festival in the Americas. Held each spring for two weeks, it features some 150 films and live events, with more than 100 filmmakers and nearly two dozen awards presented for cinematic excellence. The Festival attracts an annual audience of more than 80,000. Keenly anticipated by film buffs, championed by civic leaders, respected by filmmakers and closely watched by industry professionals, SFIFF is a key event in the Bay Area’s cultural calendar and a crucial stop on the international festival circuit.

Filmmaking is and always has been a powerful medium and will continue to be in all its mutating forms, be it television, or online media. SFIFF is deeply rooted in the finest traditions of film appreciation, both as an art form and as an agent for social change.

This season SFIFF will again feature full-length films, live action and animated shorts, television and theatrical documentaries, experimental work and new digital media, as well as panels and seminars, awards events, and retrospectives. Its acclaimed Schools at the Festival program draws 4,200 students from grades 1–12 into the festivities.

Established in 1957 to augment the Festival’s tradition of recognizing excellence, the Golden Gate Awards continue honoring filmmakers. For decades the competition has introduced Bay Area audiences to filmmakers who have transformed the medium.
