Boston and New York and LA may have their marathons, but San Francisco has the historic Zazzle Bay to Breakers 12k, one of the world’s largest and oldest foot races. The name reflects the traditional course which takes tens of thousands of participants from the northeast end of the downtown area near The Embarcadero to the west end of the city and the “breakers” of Ocean Beach. The 7.46 mile (12 kilometer) race features world-class athletes in addition to costumed runners and fun-lovers out for a soothing day of jogging and walking through San Francisco.

The Bay to Breakers, first held on January 1, 1912, was a precursor to the athletic events being planned for the 1915 Pan Pacific International Exposition. It tallied 218 registrants, 186 starters, and 121 names on the finisher’s list. Since then, Bay to Breakers has served as a testament to San Francisco’s uniqueness. The race celebrates the human spirit with a wave of athleticism, fun, and frivolity that flows across the City from the Bay to the Pacific Ocean. The Bay to Breakers draws more than 50,000 participants and 100,000 spectators annually. It even set a Guinness Book record, with 110,000 participants in 1986.

In the true spirit of San Francisco the race is an egalitarian celebration. Thousands of costumed participants join with families, weekend runners and strollers, and hoof their way through the heart of San Francisco, energized by live music and armies of raucous spectators lining the route. Throughout its long history Bay to Breakers has showcased the City’s color and its affection for eclectic traditions. Although runners come from across the country and around the globe, the race is still a San Francisco experience and a reflection of life between the breakers and the Bay.

Zazzle Bay to Breakers Final Mile is free and open to the public. The Final Mile festival will happen along MLK drive between the Great Highway and 41st Avenue. Meet up with friends and family after the race at the ‘alphabet’ A-Z garden. Enjoy food from a variety of vendors, and a score of interactive activities.
